March 11, 2016
From: Board of McCann-Caven Golf Courses, Inc.
As we approach the 2016 season, the Board of McCann-Caven Golf Courses would like to thank our players, golf professionals, staff and grounds crew for helping make McCann and College Hill such great places. We believe our courses finished 2015 in excellent shape and look forward to the 2016 season.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, both McCann and College Hill will open for the season on Friday, March 18 without temporary greens. Some spots will be out of play until the grass is at full strength, so golfers will have to take some free drops for the first few weeks.
We’ve done a lot of long-term tree work this off season and will continue this work. Don’t worry! Most of the trees will be replaced, mainly with tree species that will better fit the course’s ecosystem and benefit McCann in the long term. The removal of these trees will help the beginner golfer and speed play. None of these trees affect the challenge of the course to most players, nor did they impact player safety. Many of their roots are exposed and extend into areas of play or damage our cart paths. The larger trees being removed had simply grown too large and kept sunlight from reaching the grass we want. It may take a few seasons for the fruits of our labor to fully show, but it will pay off.
Fees and Season Pass Pricing
Thanks in large part to grants from the McCann Trust, we have completely rebuilt both pump houses and replaced much of our major equipment. Our irrigation systems and remaining equipment need significant capital investments over the next several years to maintain the courses’ quality and condition, and we need to build adequate reserves to make these investments. With the approval of the City’s common council, our rates have increased by $1 or $2 for most rates. We remain committed to our mission of providing our players with excellent golf at prices lower than other area courses.
We thank you for continuing to abide by our courses’ rules. If a player repeatedly violates our rules, they may be suspended from our courses, which will not result in refunds in the case of season pass holders. As a reminder, all alcohol consumed on McCann must be purchased from the snack bar. All of the board drinks when we play, and we don’t get revenue from the snack bar. However, City of Poughkeepsie law and our contractual obligations prohibit alcohol on McCann and our parking lot that does not come from the snack bar.
If you have any suggestions, please email us at email@example.com. We look forward to seeing you!
