2015 Letter from the Board of Directors

As we approach the 2015 season, the Board of McCann-Caven Golf Courses would like to thank our players, golf professionals, staff and grounds crew for helping making McCann and College Hill such great places. We believe our courses finished 2014 in excellent shape and look forward to the 2015 season.

Personnel Changes

As you are likely aware, Tony DeStefano is now McCann’s Director of Golf. Vince Benedetto remains in his role at College Hill. We believe that with more engagement from us and some other operational changes, our institution does not need a full time management employee, but we will monitor things closely and adjust as needed.

McCann Cashier and Bathrooms

Starting in 2015, players at McCann will pay for their greens and cart fees in the pro shop. Renovations to the pro shop to facilitate the increased traffic are underway, and improvements to the bathrooms and other common areas are also in progress. Long overdue renovations of College Hill’s bathrooms will start after McCann is done. All of the work at McCann should be done before the season starts, and College Hill should be completed in April or May.

Tee Times

McCann tee times will now be available online eight days prior to the date of the desired tee time. If you do not have access to the internet, you can call the McCann pro shop at (845) 471-3917 on a weekday, and someone there can make the tee time for you. We may adjust how far in advance tee times can be made as our staff and players adapt to the new system. Tee time reservations will require a credit card for confirmation, which our computer system will allow you to keep on file, and failing to cancel a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or holiday tee time more than 24 hours in advance will result in your card being charged for the round. We believe these changes will help our players better plan their weekends and give transparency to the tee time process, which many golfers raised to us as issues.

At College Hill, tee times will continue as in the past other than daily specials, which will be posted on the website. You can also call the College Hill pro shop at (845) 486-9112 to make reservations.

Full week season pass holders at McCann will continue to be able to reserve a tee time one day in advance by calling or stopping by the pro shop.

Outings and Leagues

We have seen increased interest for outings on days other than Mondays, including from local charities. In light of this, we have decided to allow McCann to be booked for outings on any weekday other than holidays and to allow outings to start later in the day. We will only have one event per week to prevent any change in our overall availability for our players. The outing schedule is posted on our website and in the snack bar and pro shops, and we will update it promptly if the schedule changes. As a reminder, you can tee off on the back 9 when leagues play at McCann, so please don’t assume McCann is unavailable after you get off from work or school.

Fees and Season Pass Pricing

While the City and Town own the courses, we do not receive any tax dollars, employees or other contributions from them, resulting in us relying fully on our operational revenue and charitable grants for funding. Our irrigation systems, facilities and equipment need significant capital investments over the next several years to maintain the courses’ quality and condition, especially at College Hill, and we lack adequate reserves to make these investments as of now.

While bad weather, the long-term trend of Americans playing less golf and other issues harmed our performance in 2014, we are working diligently to eliminate excess costs and improve revenue without increasing greens fees, cart fees and season pass prices. However, depending on how 2015 goes, we may need to change fees or prices in the future for our courses’ long-term well-being. In any case, we remain committed to our mission of providing our players with excellent golf at prices lower than other area courses.

Course Rules

We thank you for continuing to abide by our courses’ rules. For the benefit of our players, course personnel have been instructed to keep records of any material violations and have the authority to direct a player to leave the course if he or she violates the rules. In the case of continued violations by any player, which we do not anticipate, such player may be suspended from our courses, which will not result in refunds in the case of season pass holders. As you know, our rules prohibit, among other things, playing multiple balls, playing holes out of order, bringing coolers, drinking outside alcohol in the parking lot and playing in a fivesome. We have no issue over the tradition of enjoying alcohol while playing, but City of Poughkeepsie law and our contractual obligations prohibit open containers on McCann, including our parking lot, that do not come from the snack bar. We have no economic interest in this, but the law is the law.

If you have any suggestions, please email us at suggestions@mccanngolfcourse.com. We look forward to seeing you on our courses this year!
